In regard to the Whitewater Trout Farm hiking, I have led hikes from Mission Creek, up to the PCT, which crosses the Whitewater River, and down past the trout farm on the west side of the River for 3 years in a row. It is only about 1/2 mile from the PCT to the roadway and I have never had a problem hiking or parking in this area despite the signs. The amount of water in the river varies depending on whether they have opened the water gates upstream. Year before last, it was flooding and roaring and unsafe to cross. NOTE: Dont park at the trout farm, but instead park just before the road crosses the river and hike up to the PCT along the west side of the canyon. This may change under the new management of course.

I need to learn to use a compass. Is there a hike leader or other knowledgeable person that teaches a class or instructs one-on-one on the use of a compass?
Thanks,
Paula

Paula,
If you come on one of my hikes, I will show you the basics of map and compass. Look in the new schedule, January - March. Maybe I will put a map and compass hike in.

Rochelle,
I'm hiking a long distance starting Jan. 1, so I was hoping for some instruction before I leave on my adventure. Could I work out something with you to get instruction? Let me know.
Thank You,
Paula

Is anyone interested in doing an exploratory hike of Rockhouse valley and the surrounding areas in February? The hike will focus almost exclusively on searching for previously unrecorded Cahuilla trails and well...recording them :)

Not spam, really: I have a regularly updated blog about hiking that your members might find interesting. It's called Two-Heel Drive. Link: http://tommangan.net/twoheeldrive.
Stop in for news, links and commentary about walking upright on dirt.

My partner and I hiked the Indian Canyons last year, and I am just now doing my online photo album. Does anyone know where I can find, online, trail maps for Murray, Andreas and Palm Canyons? I always like to include material other than just pictures.
Thanks!

I haven't seen any. The way I have done it is using the National Geographic Topo program. There is a way to make a digital file version.

Hey all! I sent an email a few weeks back to the contact address on your site, but the mailbox was full on your end so it just keeps bouncing :(
I am an avid hiker and geocacher. I moved here in July '06 and spend all my freetime mapping trails and trying to figure out what's what in terms of geography. I have created a Flickr group and encourage you all to join! We share pictures from area hikes and are sure to geotag them ALL:

In particular, I am currently attempting to properly label (on map) the various "Goat Trails" above and south of Palm Springs. Someone was drinking when they named these things :) I have a discussion going here on that topic:

I am also interested in membership and would like more information.

Thanks for reminding me. I have to update the contact address. To join the club, just download the form and send it in, or come on a hike. Someone should have a form. If you start coming on hikes you surely will find someone to go with you.

Nice blog! I'm an easterner and I've always wanted to go out west to hike. I've hiked all over the southern states out here. Even Mexico but not out west...I need to get out there!
